Iconic Notes – one of my newer favorite apps on the iPhone – got an update today, and it’s a very good one.
If you haven’t come across it yet, Iconic Notes is a very full-featured note taking app for the iPhone – that lets you organize notes in folders, color code them, edit in portrait or landscape mode, choose amongst 10 different fonts, set different note background / paper styles, and lots more.
I like Evernote for its overall power across desktop, web, iPhone – but for just quick note-taking on the iPhone I prefer Iconic Notes (or a good voice notes app). Anyway, Iconic Notes is a very good app, and today’s update makes it even better.
The big new feature in the update is ‘web sharing’ – a web server built into the app which allows you to easily sync notes back and forth from a desktop PC, via the browser. Prior to today, if you wanted to share an Iconic note (even just with yourself) your only option was to email it. With the new web sharing feature, you can move notes to and from a desktop quickly and easily. You can download entire notes folders to your PC as .zip files, and upload text files back to the the app on the iPhone as well. You can also copy image files over to the iPhone app and add them to your icon library. As shown in the screencap at the beginning of this post, you can toggle the web sharing on and off with a single tap – so it’s easy (and advisable) to turn it on when you need to transfer files, and then immediately shut it off.
You even get a nice little ‘lit up’ effect on the WiFi signal icon on the app’s bottom bar – to indicate when web sharing is On …
Apart from web sharing, the remaining changes this update brings are pretty minor things. Some new note icons, and icon badges to mark notes as important.
That’s fine by me though – the one big addition is the one thing I had been wanting to see in Iconic Notes, so I’m well happy with this update.
Iconic Notes is available in the App Store at $4.99.
