Quick Look: Ty Cobb Baseball Card for iPhone

I’m a huge baseball fan, and enjoy baseball history and reading about long gone legends of the game. I also used to collect baseball cards as a kid – nothing fancy like valuable, rare ones of old-time players – just of current stars at the time, to be traded with neighborhood friends. I only mention these things because I think some of them may be prerequisites for having any interest in this new iPhone app called Ty Cobb Baseball Card.

This program is pretty much what you would expect based on the name. It’s an iPhone version of a very old Ty Cobb baseball card.

In addition to the baseball card itself, you also get a brief Bio of Cobb and his career statistics. The Bio is in outline form and includes some career milestones, teams played for and some key stats (which sort of overlaps with the career statistics page). The guy’s career stats are still staggering – .367 lifetime batting average, over 4,000 hits, 12 batting titles, 54 steals of home, and so on.

You can view the app’s pages in portrait or landscape mode, which is actually not a big plus with the sort of content it offers.

As you can tell, the app has quite a small amount of content. It’s not a keeper for me – partly because of the small amount of content, and partly because Cobb is not a particular favorite of mine.

What I would be interested in seeing is a good ‘card collection’ or ‘pack of baseball cards’ sort of offering. The limited content for one player would be fine with me if it was part of a set of 50 players or something – perhaps with different packs for different eras, or teams, or something similar.

What do you all think? Any big baseball fans here?

The Ty Cobb Baseball Card app is available now in the App Store, at $0.99.
