Flickit = Slick New Flickr App for iPhone

It might just be me – and I may have missed some good apps that are out there in this area – but it has seemed to me for a while now that we had better Flickr app choices in the jailbreak arena than in the App Store.

Flickit is a very nice new Flickr uploading app that could start persuading me that the App Store offerings are catching up in this area. I downloaded it last night and like it a whole lot so far. Here’s some of its App Store description and features detail:

Keep your Flickr photostream up to date while you’re on the go! Upload and tag batches of photos using Flickit’s super-fast uploading engine and streamlined interface.
FEATURES:
-Add photos from your iPhone library or take new shots directly with the camera
-Batch upload multiple photos at once
-Edit standard Flickr metadata such as Title, Description, and privacy settings
-Assign Tags and create new tags
-Assign Sets
-Tag photos with geolocation coordinates

Flickit does not let you do anything in terms of viewing or interacting with the Flickr web site. You can’t go view popular sets / tags etc and explore Flickr via this app. It is purely a program for helping you upload your photos to Flickr.

And it does a great job at it. It’s got a simple interface that’s very, very easy to use, and features lots of big, obvious buttons, which I love. Its minimal settings options include choosing the size you want to send images at (and it reminds you there is a trade-off here – larger images will take longer to upload) – with choices being Large (1600X1200), Medium (800X600), and Small (400X300).

Flickit allows you to upload photos from your existing Photo Library or to snap a new pic within the app itself for uploading. If you take a new pic, you can Preview it once it’s taken and choose to use it or re-take it. When you’re choosing from the photo library, you can choose multiple images (not sure what the limit is – haven’t hit it yet, but haven’t tried to) and upload them all at once. Once you’ve got some images chosen for uploading, you can set a good number of attributes on each one – including titles, descriptions, tags, sets, visibility setting (public, family, friends), and geolocation.

Uploading is very quick (over 3G and WiFi) and shows you good progress indicators as it goes along.

A couple of wish list items of mine for Flickit:

It would be nice to be able to select multiple photos for upload in one go once you’re in the Photo Library choosing them. At the moment, you choose one and then it drops you back to Flickit, where you need to tap the ‘Library’ button again to go choose a second pic, and the same again for a third, and so on.

It would also be cool to be able to apply attributes like sets, tags etc. to multiple photos at once, rather than having to select each pic and apply them. In some cases I’m sure I will want to apply distinct settings for certain pics, but there are also times where a single set of tags etc. applies nicely for my whole group of photos.

Overall, I like Flickit a lot. I have been uploading to Flickr very rarely over recent months, largely because I hadn’t spotted a good uploading app for the iPhone (although I must admit I didn’t search a great deal either). Flickit looks like it will have me using Flickr often and happily once again …

Flickit is available in the App Store now, and is a free app.
