Study for Cisco CCNA, A + Certifications on iPhone

I used to be a full-time ‘techie’ for a living (networks, tech support etc), so a couple of recently released iPhone apps that help your prepare to take technical certification exams have caught my eye. The two apps are CCNA Networking Practice Exam and A + Certification Exam 20-601, both from Wallsberg Inc.

The A + certification is an entry level sort of cert, usually taken by Level 1 support staff and hardware technicians. CCNA stands for Cisco Certified Network Associate (its exam number is 640-802) and is the first (and most junior) of Cisco’s rigorous set of cert exams covering internetworking and similar topics. Both of these apps, from what I can gather in their App Store descriptions, are essentially practice test engines. They’re not full study guides that help you learn the material on the exams – but pure practice exam primers. I’ve always tended to use both a study guide book – with labs included – as well as lots of practice testing when prepping for tech exams.

The two apps both have self-contained content, as both state that no internet connection is needed to use them.

The descriptions of the two apps are a little sparse – there is no mention of how big the question pool is for the practice exams is, or any details on whether the publisher has any history in the certifications / practice tests arena – and it’s not a great omen that when you try to go to their site (listed in the App Store pages) you get a pure fail page, and a ‘Coming Soon’ page.

I think this sort of app – assisting with exam prep – is ideally suited for the iPhone. I wonder when we’ll start seeing some of these for some of the Microsoft exams, and maybe from some of the established test prep publishers.

I’d be very interested to hear whether anybody has tried either of these apps out yet, and what you think of them if you have …
