Quick Look: SmashWord for iPhone

SmashWord is a different and fun word game for the iPhone, that is described as ‘a fast-paced blend of speed and vocabulary’. Here’s an idea how it works:

Connect the letters Boggle-style – vertically, horizontally, or diagonally – to form words of three letters or longer by dragging your finger from one tile to the next. Valid words are removed and new letters fall into place when you lift your finger.

I’ve never played Boggle, but have been enjoying SmashWord a lot on the iPhone. To me, this game feels like word search on steroids – because you can go in all directions, and combinations of directions, to form words.

The object of the game is to get as many points as you can as quickly as you can, so you can advance through the levels and keep the game alive. The longer a word you make, the more points you get for it. When you try to make a word that’s incorrect, time is taken away.

There are only a few settings items for the game – including difficulty level (Non-stop, Easy, Medium, and Hard) and the size of the board – 4X4, 5X5, 6X6, 7X7, and 8X8.

The thing that makes this game is definitely the ‘go in all directions’ element of things. Here’s a quick example of how that works:

In the higher-placed yellow-highlighted rectangle, you could start by tapping and holding on the ‘H’, move down to select the ‘O’, move upwards diagonally to select another ‘O’, and then downwards to select the ‘T’ – to form the word hoot. In the lower highlighted rectangle, there are lots of 3-letter word possibilities, but one would be ‘dog’ – which you’d get by starting on the ‘D’, moving left to select the ‘O’, and then down to select the ‘G’.

SmashWord uses a dictionary that contains over 170,000 words. It’s another game that both my wife and daughter enjoy as well, and another one that is helping my daughter with mastering words.

We started with SmashWord Lite (free version) and just recently upgraded to the full version to get more levels / words.

If you like word games, this is a very addictive one, and a very good one!

You can find SmashWord in the App Store now, at a ‘limited’ time special price of $0.99. You can also check out SmashWord Lite to get to know the game a little before buying the full version.
