Nabbit = Like Shazam, But Different …

Sorry for the slightly dopey post title, but I have a couple good reasons for it: I couldn’t think of a better one, and it’s probably the quickest way to get across the type of application that Nabbit for the iPhone is.

Shazam is the enormously popular iPhone application that takes a quick sample of any song playing around you (close enough to the iPhone’s speakers) and identifies the track’s artist and title for you. It’s one of those ‘wow factor’ iPhone apps that you just have to show to all your friends.

Nabbit also helps identify songs (and who sings them) for you, but only from radio stations. It may not have quite the same wow factor as Shazam – since it doesn’t listen to and analyze music playing near it – but if you’re a big radio listener, it may be even ore useful.

With Nabbit, you just tell it which city you’re in and then use its tuner controls to select radio stations. Once you select a station it will take a few seconds and then tell you what song (by which artist) is currently playing. It identifies what’s playing very fast (under 30 seconds usually) if you’re on a Wi-Fi or 3G connection. I’m not sure how Nabbit works, but it does not need to ‘listen’ at all in order to tell you what’s playing. You don’t even have to have the radio on for it to work.

Once it has identified what’s playing, you can click the little blue arrow at the top right of its screen to see more detail on the song, the album it came from, album art, and an iTunes link for it.

Two other very cool features of Nabbit are:

  • It lets you set your favorite stations as presets (up to 5 of them) just like you do on your car radio.
  • It shows History of recently played tracks on whichever station you’ve got selected.

If you listen to the radio a lot – and have most of your ‘Oh man, who sings that?’ moments when listening to it – then Nabbit is another great app to have around to help answer those questions for you. At the moment, Nabbit covers around 130 US cities.

Nabbit is in the App Store now, and is a free app.
