New Binary Game on iPhone = Big Fun for Math Geeks, Just Plain Geeks, Others …

The newly launched Binary Game for the iPhone is described as a ‘fast paced, highly addictive puzzle game, with very simple and intuitive game play’. The phrase ‘highly addictive’ is probably one of the most over-used in the App Store – but I have to say, in this case it is spot-on accurate, as is the rest of that short description.

I downloaded Binary Game late last night and have already spent big chunks of time with it. Hit the jump for more screen caps and quick impressions on this cool new game …

The app claims to be a simple and intuitive game to play, and again, that is proved very true when you try it out. It also offers a good and clear set of instructions, and a practice mode – so you can get good and familiar with things before diving into the fray and trying out its two main gameplay modes.

The game offers you a single number on each turn, which is your ‘goal’ to resolve by turning on and off the appropriate binary switches to make them add up to the goal number presented. So for example, if the goal number is 80, your quickest solution is to turn on the 64 and 16 switches. If 170 is the goal number, things are a little more challenging – and you’ll need to have the switches for 128, 32,8, and 2 turned on to resolve it.

Remembering long-gone days of having to do IP subnetting (only for exams) and wrestling with binary, I was anxious to get into the real game and show it a thing or two once I’d practiced just a little – but still found the instructions overview and Practice mode useful. The two main game modes are Challenge Mode and Speed Mode. Here’s the descriptions for each of these:

Both modes are fun to play, but I especially like Speed Mode – with the time pressure turned up and forcing you to think fast. I’ve also found my scores are more competitive in Speed Mode – although the game is already hugely popular (or at least that’s my main excuse, as well as the fact the sun was clearly in my eyes) so I have not cracked the Top 75 yet. Getting close though.

Binary Game has a very clean and simple interface – you know your way round it inside out within a few minutes. A you might have gathered from the last paragraph, you can save your high scores and then sync them to the web and see if you can crack the ‘Top’ lists. If you can, please don’t come shout about it here, as I’ll only resent you for it. 🙂

Another nice little touch is a clearly labeled and easy to spot ‘Support’ button within the app. I haven’t had any need to use it so far, but the fact that the devs make it easy to know how to seek support is a very good omen.

I have never liked math, did not enjoy my previous brush with binary much at all, and generally much prefer word games – but I love this game. Just as its App Store description promises, it is super easy to play, fast-paced and rapidly and strongly addictive.

You can find Binary Game in the App Store now, priced at $1.99.
