Addition's iPhone Modem 2: Use Your iPhone as a Wireless Laptop Modem
Do a lot of traveling? If you’re feeling left out and un-connected while on the road, and simply need to get back on your laptop…there is a solution you can use to get back up and running on the interwebs… With a handy little app called iPhoneModem 2 and a jailbroken iPhone 3G.
The unfortunate news around this app is Apple has decided it is in conflict with the App Store Terms and Conditions… So, like I said you’ll have to pick it up on Cydia.
So how do you get cookin’? Here’s how:
- Jailbreak your iPhone. Do a search for ‘Jailbreak iPhone’ on the internet if you don’t know why or how. QuickPWN is a great option.
- Install iPhoneModem 2 via Cydia. After your jailbroken, get Cydia and search this ‘unofficial’ app store for iPhoneModem 2. It’ll be there waiting for you.
- Install the helper app. This app goes on your laptop and is essential to get your iPhone and laptop working together.
- Set up your network. Run the helper app and hit connect. A default network called ‘iPhoneModem’ will be created that does not have a password to start (you can change this). Open up your iPhone’s settings and tap WiFi. Make sure that WiFi is turned on, and select ‘iPhoneModem’.
That’s it! For more information and details, be sure to hit up iPhoneModem.com. This handy little app is available for both Mac and PC.

These apps are crap.
You can do the same thing and perform a hell of a lot better by creating a reverse proxy SSH connection.
If you want full network access (not just web browsing) but the full direct access for anything from ftp, bit-torrent, http, skype, etc. there is only one way to go.. jailbreak and install PDANET via Cydia.
Ive tried all these apps last year and am surprised they keep popping up as recommendations in blogs today.
I agree with the writer above…I setup the iPhoneModem on both the iPhone & Mac & it worked great for 2 days, then when I paid the $10 to register so the pop-ups would stop, it quit working shortly after. Repeated emails have been sent to the company but are all unanswered. It seems to me this is a great way for a shadowly company to make lots of money as I believe they are based in Portugal…..shame on them. In doing research, have noticed lots of people have had the same experience. Looks like a scam to me. If anyone has had this experience & found a way to get it working again, please contact me at robfreeman@look.ca Thansks….Rob
Hi
WARNING!!!!!
AVOID IPHONE MODEM 2, SCAM, SCAM
I tried this software before going away for a week, worked great for one day, when I returned from my trip, I tried it again, could not connect, again, and again.
I wandered if the trial had expired, so email them explaining my problems, no replay, 2 days had gone by and still no reply, could not wait no longer, so I went ahead and made the purchase,
I’m an idiot, still not working emailed them lots of times, and they have not replied to any of my emails.
As the writer above wrote ‘looks like a scam’ I believe it is, so avoid it like the plague.
PDANET is fantastic, oh why did I not hear about his first, I’m trying it out at the moment and so far its working flawlessly.
Please everyone don’t make the same mistake I did and get ripped off. AVOID iphone Modem 2
Regards
Maff
I have to agree with all of the above comments. Same thing happened to me. It worked for about a week I paid the $10 for the full app. Sent a few emails and got no replies to any of them. Be warned do not purchase this app it’s useless and is indeed a big fat SCAM.
yeah, I just installed PDANET and was up and running in five seconds (using it now to make this comment—laptop over 3g network). screw iPhone Modem.
Same problem as others
It worked for a few minutes, then I paid my monehy and it no longer works.
Well it was only $10.00 but it was my $10.00 that hurt.
Glad I read this first before using iPhone Modem2. Thanks for leaving some good info here.
thanks folks for good information I am glad didnt waste money on Modem2 instead i went with other option.
Everyone… I struggled with iphonemodem several times, uninstall reinstal, tried to manualy configure the proxy setting but it just never worked. Internet explorer & firefox just didn’t like the using the proxy.
I can’t beleive there is so much info on this completely usless app, everywhere I looked on the web for an app to use the iphone as a modem turned up this crappy software.
DO NOT BOTHER!!!
After finding this site & the comments on it I went straight for PDANET & had it working in minutes, whats more, with PDANET it has actually improved the wireless connection I get through my wifi router at home. For some reason, my laptops wireless NIC keeps disconnecting from my wifi router (apparently other colleagues who have the same laptop & wifi router get the same issue) but using PDANET I can use the usb connection fron laptop to iphone & use the wireless on the iphone to connect it to my wifi with no issues. Plus it works great on 3g too. Easy & fast to set up.
Thanks to those for leaving their comments above.
I have to concur with everyone else on this one. I wish I would have found these commments before I shelled out $10 on this app. Same story — It worked for a day and then crapped out. Here is where I include some keywords on this. Iphone Modem 2 does not work. Iphonemodem is a scam.
OK i was interested in PDAnet but read it does not work on Mac laptops does anyone have a suggestion other than buy a PC? Iphone modem did not work out of the box which is why I am here,
@DEEBEE
Take a look at iphonemodem.de . It’s a freeware option which works as well (or even better) than the iphonemodem.com option.
It uses an secure SSH connection between the Mac and Iphone.
Ive just sared using it and liking it by the minute
