How Dumb Is App Store Search?

My answer, for today at least = very dumb.

I just posted a little earlier today on an exciting new iPhone app called Do It, that I’d spotted in a ‘recently added’ list this morning. I knew immediately that the app interested me, so I did a quick search for it in the App Store on the iPhone. As I finished typing the letters ‘d, o, i’ the app I’m after was already the only entry showing in the results – excellent I thought. Not so much though. Once I tapped on it, I get presented with a screen full of a ton of apps that must have the words ‘do it’ somewhere in their description. The first few listings were: ‘Bounce on Lite’, ‘Shazam’, and ‘RepairPal’.

I hit the ‘Load 25 more results’ link twice – and still did not see the app I wanted. I tried iTunes on the desktop, and got the same unhelpful results – see the screencap above which shows them.

Mind you, there was not a single app whose actual name was ‘Do It’, like the one I was looking for. So how the heck does the search function grade its results??? How does the actual title of an app somehow score so low that you get pages worth of apps that do NOT have that name???

I don’t get it at all. Maybe I’m missing something obvious here – please tell me if I am and I’ll be embarrassed and shut up about this. 🙂
