Or, as the folks at Mobile Orchard so nicely put it

So, they ‘ve learnt a lesson so we don ‘t have to.. skip the humor. The iTunes Store approval folks aren ‘t fans.

I love the Mobile Orchard site, even though I ‘m not an iPhone developer (their primary audience I think) “ for their excellent iPhone applications marketplace insight, and for great anecdotal stories like this one today.

It seems a UK developer (Never Odd or Even) was trying to push through an urgent bug fixes update to their Instant New York iPhone app recently, and they included this listing of the update ‘s benefits:

  • Editorial database updated
  • Broken images fixed
  • Extra dragons

It should be note that their app has nothing to do with dragons.

And here ‘s the end result of injecting a little humor in the update description:

Apple duly replied:

To review your application for the App Store, we need to be able to verify features as outlined in the release notes. Please respond to this email and clarify the phrase ‘Extra dragons ‘.

In short, it led to a week ‘s delay in rolling out a critical bug-fix update to their customers – not a great PR event.

Ouch.  Definitely put the sense of humor on hold when submitting this stuff to Apple.  The only thing that surprises me about this attitude by Apple is that it seems so different to the approach taken on main (not update) app descriptions.  For example, how about an Alien Implants Detector app whose description includes:

A thousands billion dollars technology in your iPhone! Alien Implants Detector utilizes the latest extraterrestrial elements detection technology to detect alien implants in your body!

Was anyone asked to clarify that one?  Yet another glorious App Store grey area 🙂
