Tapulous - Social Apps for iPhone - Tap Tap Revenge 2_ A History

So, as I mentioned last night “ Tap Tap Revenge 2 has just been launched and it looks like a helluva good update to a popular and well-loved iPhone game.

The original developer of Tap Tap Revenge is a guy called Nate True.  He ‘s one of my favorite iPhone devs “ because he ‘s been around since early jailbreak days (and is a former Dev Team member), because TTR has always been a great app, and because he just seems like a real good guy, a very likable type.

Alongside the launch of Tap Tap Revenge 2, Nate has done an excellent post over on the Tapulous (the publishers of TTR) blog “ giving us a brief history of TTR from its jailbreak origins right up through the brand new version.  Or as Nate cleverly puts it on his blog ‘In which I recount the history of Tap Tap Revenge and make shout-outs to those responsible ‘.

Here ‘s just a few interesting excerpts from Nate ‘s ‘History ‘ post:

On the app ‘s beginnings

It was just over a year ago that I spent two solid days developing the first Tap Tap Revolution for the iPhone on a pre-SDK jailbroken iPhone.  I published it in September of 2007 (big thanks to Shaun Erickson for all the packagey-hostey-testey stuff) and it got rave reviews despite its humble simplicity and paltry music variety.  Soon after that release came a new theme (thanks to Doc) and the ability to play songs from your iTunes library and share tap tracks in the cloud.

Two days!!!  OK, he ‘s a little less likable now. 🙂

I remember those days, when Tap Tap Revolution first came out, and immediately impressed.

On its early success, the move over to Tapulous, and adding features

It quickly succeeded and rose up the charts (though the charts were primitive, hand-drawn chalkboard affairs back then) and caught the eye of a nascent little stealth startup then-soon-to-be-called Tapulous.  Tap Tap Revolution was quickly snapped up and I was hired to continue development work on it.

Two-player same-phone gameplay mode? You got it.  An announcement platform? Sure thing.  A mode where you can shake the phone and get 8x multiplier? That ‘s just crazy enough to work! Tap Tap got a new name ( ‘Tap Tap Revenge ‘) and kept getting new features.  All the way up to version 1.6, Tap Tap Revenge had been using the same codebase that I ‘d started way back in 2007 as I was just learning Objective C.

OK, no more spoiling.  Nate ‘s full post is a great read, and includes a bunch of shout-outs to those who have contributed to TTR ‘s success.  There ‘s also a very good video advert for TTR 2 at the bottom of the post that is well worth a watch. Check it all out HERE
