My wife, mother-in-law, and father-in-law have recently become iPhone users (possibly more on that later) “ so I ‘ve found myself demonstrating little tips and tricks that more experienced users already know about a fair bit lately.  It ‘s been a good reminder to me of how much I take as a given now, and how cool some of this stuff was to me the first time I learned of or stumbled across it “ and how I still make frequent use of some of these.

So I thought I ‘d start sharing some of these whenever I remember to.

Today ‘s tip is how to make a new photo out of an existing one, using the iPhone ‘s built-in screen capture ability.  It ‘s very quick and easy to do “ read on for the details

To illustrate how to do this, let ‘s say we like the picture of Carlos Santana shown at the top of this post, but we ‘d really like to have more of a ‘head shot ‘ of him.  Here ‘s how we can get that right quick:

  • Start by going to your Camera Roll or whichever photo library the photo is located in.
  • Select the picture you want to work with.
  • Pinch and zoom until you ‘re happy with the section of the photo being shown.
  • Hold down the Home button and the Power On/Off button at the same time for just a very quick second “ until you see the iPhone screen ‘go white ‘ for a brief moment. (for those who haven ‘t used this before “ this captures exactly what is on the iPhone screen the moment you do it)
  • Exit the Photos application and go back into it.
  • Check your Camera Roll and you should see the new image you just captured.

That ‘s it.  A very simple but very useful little iPhone ‘trick ‘.
