It ‘s been just a year since the iPhone App Store was first announced “ though it wasn ‘t until a few months later that it opened for business. And today it ‘s being reported that

  • The number of apps approved for the store has passed the 25,000 mark.
  • There are now more iPhone OS apps than Windows Mobile apps “ despite the nine year head start that WinMo had.
  • It has more apps focused on rude bodily noises than any OS in the history of mankind.

Well, I made the last point up “ but even so that ‘s a pretty amazing first year since being announced

Despite all the fart apps, and the stacks of bizarre and rubbishy apps that have made their way into the store, I still think it “ and the good and powerful apps it contains “ is the most exciting thing about the iPhone.  It will continue to be so as well “ and we ‘ll see more and more powerful apps as the phone itself gets improved hardware specs in future models.

There are a number of major flaws with the App Store “ things like the ‘there is no system ‘ approach to approvals and rejections of apps, the lack of trial software (though Lite versions are making this less painful), the lack of a ratings system and Apple ‘s apparent censorship of material they deem potentially offensive.  My biggest wish list item is an apps management solution (from Apple or a 3rd party) that lets you manage and arrange your apps much, much more easily on home screens “ and an approval for an app launcher app of some kind.

What are your favorite and least favorite things about the App Store?
