What The Flying … Is Up with iPhone Updates???

iPhone App Store Updates

Over the last several weeks, the iPhone ‘s App Store ‘Updates ‘ tab consistently presents me with bizarre and untrustworthy results.  One minute it will tell me there are no updates available for my installed apps “ when I know that this is not correct.  The next minute it will show a large number of updates that have already been installed or that represent versions that are much older than the currently installed ones for a number of applications.

Basically, the ‘Updates ‘ feature has gone crazy “ and presents misinformation far more often than valid, accurate data.  This is not unique to me at all.  Lots of people are reporting the same sort of issues.  See this thread at the EIC forums, or this one “ which is one of several at the Apple Support discussion forums “ for lots more evidence on this.

Read on for today ‘s simple example of this issue

Check out the screencap at the top of this post.  Notice how the time says 1:20 PM and the Updates badge shows 17 updates. Here ‘s what I saw when I tapped the Updates button, which is meant to ‘refresh ‘ the info:

iPhone app updates

It ‘s still 1:20 PM, I ‘ve taken no other action other than tapping the Updates button, and now I supposedly have 20 updates available!

So I tapped the button again

updates

And then I was told only 15 updates were available. Not even one minute has passed on the clock, all I ‘ve done is hit the refresh button, and I get three different answers from the Updates tab.  And of course most of the updates shown are out-of-date / have already been applied.

As noted by various users in the forum threads listed above, a reboot of the iPhone will sometimes appear to fix this issue “ but only ever for a short while. It invariably re-occurs within hours or days.

The updates feature has always been touted as one of the things that makes the iPhone App Store so slick.  It ‘s not looking real slick in this area right now.

Anyone found a reliable fix for this yet?
