Seeing web articles focusing on the one year anniversary of the App Store ‘s unveiling announcement has made me recall a discussion that used to rage on iPhone forums and elsewhere leading up to the store ‘s opening.
There was an idea back then that ‘legit ‘ apps, approved by Apple to get into the store, would be somehow magically perfect. Unlike ‘buggy ‘, unreliable jailbreak apps, the new App Store crop would be solid, bug-free, pristine applications, the theory went.
Whenever I heard that argument put forward, I would always disagree strongly with it. I did not think Apple would have the resources to do thorough testing on the sheer volume of apps I expected we would see for the store. I also have done enough work in the tech support field to believe that there are no ‘perfect ‘ apps. Doesn ‘t matter if they ‘re written by teenagers in their bedrooms, or by Microsoft “ software is never flawless.
I remember getting told in forums “ and even in our JAiB chat program on Talkshoe “ that I was way, way off on this. That Apple would have the resources and skills needed to provide only perfect apps in the App Store. The legendary (and mythical) ‘it just works ‘ factor would just ‘make it so ‘ for the new applications.
Well roughly 7 months since the App Store opened for business, I would say we can clearly see that Apple does not have any secret formula in this area. No magic wands to wave over ‘legit ‘ apps to make them 100% robust and inherently superior to jailbreak apps.
There are plenty of bug-ridden, badly performing or completely non-performing apps in the App Store. There are apps that would appear to go against the stated rules of approval and the SDK. Apps that appear to be completely abandoned and unsupported by their developers. Apps that frequently crash and burn, and often take the iPhone down with them when they do.
So anyway “ as someone who ‘s not often right, I had to take a quick moment and savor getting this one spot-on (IMO).
Funny thing is, I would love to be proved less and less right as more time passes and the App Store matures. I hope Apple does devote more resources to this area, and does come up with some much more effective processes for the App Store
