App Store Hits 25,000 Apps… Can the Copycats Compete?

This week the iPhone App Store reached over 25,000 available applications, this according to a new report at Yahoo. This week RIM also announced their App World, which will be the OTA store for Blackberry users.  Can RIM and others compete with Apple’s App store?

There are three things I think make the App store so appealing.

  1. Integrated mobile access. Not a web site to visit but a real mobile experience with direct access to the goods.
  2. Integrated single source billing. There are no carriers involved to dilute the experience or compete with the store offerings.
  3. Ease of use. It is almost too easy to find and buy an app at the App store. I know people that are completely computer illiterate that figured out how to do this on their own.

So can the other storefronts compete with what Apple has accomplished by revolutionizing the Smartphone market? It’s unlikely even though I am sure we will still see many versions in the near future but I can almost guarantee they will all be of the me too variety.
