Ustream iPhone jailbreak app

Ustream.tv, as you may or may not know, is an online application that allows its users to stream themselves live via the internet to a live audience. Late last year they tried to submit it into the App Store but it was rejected because the app records videos and that ‘s against Apple’s TOS. So Ustream decided to stick it to the man and put it in Cydia. So until Apple takes a chill pill with their rules Ustream will be broadcasting mobile but only for those with jailbroken devices.

Lets run down some of its features.

  • Viewer polls (unfortunately it only allows yes and no answers)
  • It allows you to record for playback on your Ustream profile
  • A mute button so people don’t hear everything you have to say.. hehe
  • An auto Twitter feed update
  • A setting to change video quality
  • The ability to send location so your audience sees where you are (Stalker Alert)

So the question remains, how well does this app work? Will it really stream what I see live? The answer is kinda.  The first few seconds of streaming on a 3G connection is good and then the latency gets very lagged. But using a WiFi connection is fairly decent – not all the way there, but good enough to use.

So obviously this won’t appeal for everyone. All we can do is hope someday we see this app in the Official App Store.  Until then this is a decent option.
