Recently the app store released an update to the free version of AIM instant messenger as well as a paid version. The free version sports embedded ads while the paid version is add free. That however is the only real feature you get for plopping down the $2.99.
Now I am not a regular user of AIM but if you are the free app is definitely worth the download. The instant messaging works as expected and the ability to send SMS messages to anyone in your contact book is a nice feature especially if you know people with unlimited text but a phone you can not install AIM on.
The advertising was far and few between for me and I never saw it while sending message so not bad for an add supported app.
The paid version on the other hand does remove the ads, and the app icon is purple instead of red, but other than that there is absolutely no reason to pay for this application.
AOL pay attention, the life span for apps in the app store are short enough add some actual benefit if you want to have a paid version and create any real revenue.
