Ex-Apple employees developing iPhone business applications

A group of former Apple- and Motorola employees is developing business applications for the iPhone.Apperian is the name of their little company where they will develop applications which make communication with extern employees or customers. It wouldn’t be much of a surprise if Apple was one of the donors for this project. Chuck Goldman, who is in charge of Apperian, was head of professional services-divisions of Apple for 8 years. On top of that, Goldman became in charge of the iPhone Enterprise Beta Program, once the iPhone was launched. His job was making the iPhone suitable for business networks and developing applications who are relevant for companies. But Apple soon discovered that business applications wasn’t their cup of cake. Apple doesn’t develop custom applications for third parties. If they would want to do this, it would create a much to big risk and liability if something goes wrong. Applications which got sold via the Appe Store the owner himself is liable if something goes wrong, not Apple.

Goldman had a clear shot to start his own company, took along some colleagues, took friends along from Motorola and appointed his brother Barry as chief financial officer. Big consultancy companies, like IBM and Accenture, haven’t got much experience with Apple-products. And Apple’s own network of consultants are heading for markets like desktop publishing and video production. The development of business applications, especially in combinations with the iPhone, is relatively new.

Goldman doesn’t want to say which customers he won with his new company Apperian, but we’re talking about billions of dollars here. Neither does Goldman want to say whether his company got any money from Apple or not. Apperian was founded on the 15th of january with money from angel-investors en ‘strategic’ investors, without any specific names mentioned. “We can’t claim that we’re ‘officially supported by Apple’—no one gets that. But they are highly encouraged by Apperian.” The company has 12 employees in service.

Goldman defenitely found a hole in the market. It surprises me that nobody has come up with this more early. Lucky Goldman!
