I ‘m not going to attempt to identify and list what makes an essential iPhone application. That list is very user-specific I think anyway. I do have a quick thought for today on one of the ways you can easily tell when an app has become essential to you though.
When you find that without even thinking about it, you are using it every day, and when you find that if that app is not firing on all cylinders or is unavailable, you feel just a little bit lost “ that is an essential app.
The app that made me think of this today is FlickIt “ a very simple and very effective app for sharing your iPhone pics up to a Flickr account. I use this every day to throw screencaps of iPhone apps up to Flickr for using in posts here, and to share photos with family and friends.
Earlier today FlickIt wasn ‘t feeling well, or maybe my WiFi connection had gone south without giving me any good indication. In any case, FlickIt wasn ‘t working for about half an hour. I had a set of about 8 screencaps I wanted to upload at the time “ and the idea of using any other method was *not* appealing at all to me.
In the end, I worked on something else, that did not require that set of screencaps “ and I soon found FlickIt was back to normal (and the issue may have been my WiFi the whole time “ didn ‘t pay enough attention to know for sure). And boy was I glad to see it back uploading my pics lickety split like it does every day.
So all of this was a good reminder for me that FlickIt is one of my most used and favorite, and essential, iPhone apps.
I did a post introducing FlickIt a few weeks back, which you can find HERE. At the time, I ‘d only just discovered the app and liked it a lot. I ‘m glad to see that good first impression has panned out, and then some.
