Quick Look: FanFinder Sports Bar Locator

FanFinder iPhone app

FanFinder Sports Bar Locator is meant to ‘locate the sports bars where fans of your favorite teams are watching the games ‘. Here ‘s a little more from its App Store description:

This application is perfectly suited for fans of the NCAA Tournament who want to watch games with their fellow alumni.  No longer will you have to suffer through watching games at a sports bar surrounded by your rival teams fans!

I ‘m a huge sports fan, and a fan of bars, and have no objection to being in a sports bar full of fans of the Longhorns or whoever else I ‘m rooting for in a given sporting event.  So this app has instant appeal for me.  Sadly, it does not perform very well at all thus far

FanFinder is supposed to use GPS to locate your position and tell you about the closest sports bars to that location.  I ‘ve been playing around with the app a bit yesterday and today “ and so far it has never given any indication that it knows anything about my location, with Location Services and 3G switched on.  Every time I use the app I have to either zoom in to Texas and then drill down to a city, or provide it with a zip code or city name.

The app also promises to let you enter your favorite teams, and then simply shake the phone to find out which sports bars nearby cater to fans of those teams.  Great stuff. Except that it has told me that in Austin there are no sports bars that cater to UT Longhorns fans, in Dallas there are none for Cowboys fans, in Houston there are none for Astros fans, and San Antonio is apparently empty when it comes to bars for Spurs fans.  I ‘m thinking of a number between zero and zero for the accuracy level here.

So all I end up seeing nearly every time is a fallback list of sports bars in general in a given area.  To be fair, even that is of some use “ as it provides a screen for each of those venues with address and phone number details.

The usefulness of this feature is not huge though “ as I can get very similar information out of the Google Maps application “ and of course it is doing far less than promised by its App Store description.

Most of the app ‘s other features “ like providing directions to each sports bar, and a button for inviting friends are fairly run-of-the-mill stuff.

FanFinder feels like it got rushed out the door to me.  Many of its buttons are frequently unresponsive, and it fails to recognize a shake of the phone quite often.  As I said above, I like the concept for this app, but it needs *a lot* of work at this stage.

You can find FanFinder in the App Store now “ it is a free ad-supported app.
