GarageBand, Powerful Indeed

GarageBand was first introduced in the 2004 Macworld Keynote, where the whole app was explained, so if you are a recent mac user you might not be aware about the true power GarageBand has. Here is a list of all the main features it has:

  1. Has more than 50 software instruments.
  2. You have piano, guitar, horns, drums, and more, which you get to play with your keyboard. And something really cool about this is that all the guitar tracks can work as an amp with different effects when plugging in your guitar.

  3. Over 1,000 professional audio loops (way more if you buy Jam Packs).
  4. This one is really cool, if you don’t have time to make each instrument’s track, you can just insert loops of really nice instruments into your project.

  5. You have total control.
  6. You can control the volume of all the instruments, mute them if you need to concentrate in a single track, drag and drop almost everything, copy and paste, edit each track with the Track Editor, etc.

  7. You can use your guitar, midi keyboard, microphone, and guitar hero or rock band controllers to live record.
  8. All you need to do is plug your instrument to your mac, and something that is not officially supported by Apple, but a really cool thing to do is to use your Guitar Hero or Rock Band controllers to play tracks, all you need is to download some software and drivers (which don’t take long to set up and all) and you are ready to go. So you can use your mac pretty much as an amp plus being able to record and then export your project into iTunes.

  9. Make professional Podcasts.
  10. I guess this one is pretty much straight-forward.

  11. You can learn to play guitar and piano.
  12. I’m pretty sure you already know about this one, since it’s the latest feature of GarageBand. You can download lessons from talented artists for a fair price, and have a great learning experience, I would recommend you to see it yourself by visiting Apple’s GarageBand site.

So there you go, go ahead and try to make a trance song, some rock, or just good old jazz. I’m pretty sure you can find a tutorial for almost any genre online, YouTube has good videos showing how to create awesome stuff.
