And it ‘s even greater to be the father of a 6 year old. My daughter turned 6 today. Six is such a great age, and she is such a great daughter, such a great girl. She ‘s lovely and clever and grown up “ and today was just an awesome, perfect day.
We ‘ve got a mini-tradition going over the last few years “ where she has a party with her friends on the weekend closest to her birthday (this year it will be this coming Saturday at a really cool ‘painting party ‘ venue) and on the actual day, we spend it with just her and her mom and I.
The general idea on Zoe ‘s actual birthday is “ as far as possible “ to let her set the program for the whole day. This year she ran down a number of ideas leading up to the day “ the local zoo, a putt-putt golf course, a local Children ‘s Museum, and others. All plans went out the window today “ and she switched it up a bit at the last minute “ which was great because we had a spontaneous and wonderful day. It included:
- Tons of lovely birthday banners and streamers that her mom decked our place out with in the wee hours of last night
- Orange juice and cake early in the morning
- A visit to Build a Bear “ where Zoe built a horse, and spent ages getting outfits for the horse, and various other accessories. Sunflower the horse is pictured at the top of this post.
- A stop at her current favorite restaurant “ where we fed a couple of Mallard ducks and around 20 ravenous turtles on the back deck. Unfortunately the feeding of animals at this favorite spot is big fun, but the feeding of kids is not so good “ as there ‘s nothing on their Kids Menu that appeals to our new 6 year old. So
- A stop at a local Irish pub she ‘d never been to before, but where the burgers sounded good, and lived up their billing (and the Guiness stew was great). She ‘s very gradually becoming a tiny bit of a sports fan (though she ‘d never admit, as she ‘s a real girly girl) “ and the Liverpool v Real Madrid Champions League match was all over several big screens in this pub. She used to be very shy (even intimidated) in loud places. Today she asked to come with me “ twice! “ when I got up from the table to check out a goal, with plenty of folks going berserk (loudly) “ and she was not intimidated in the slightest, she was into it.
- Then back home for some major playing with Sunflower, a little more cake, and some winding down before bed.
I know that may not sound like the most glamorous or exciting program “ but Zoe chose it and she had a blast the whole way through (we all did). And she was fun and funny and just exceptionally good company all day long. No fuss at any stage of the day, just a grown up, fun girl “ who luckily is still at an age where she thinks her parents are very good company and who just enjoys the heck out of a family day.
It ‘s great to be 6 “ and it ‘s great to help our girl celebrate being 6
