Review: Absolutely Trivial – Baseball

baseballtrivia3

As I ‘ve mentioned before here, I ‘m a big baseball fan “ and I ‘ve been one since I was very young. I used to love not only playing and watching games “ but also reading newspaper reports and box scores and doing my best to memorize tons of player stats.

So a baseball trivia game like Absolutely Trivial “ Baseball is right up my alley.  It offers over 1,000 questions on topics including: MLB players and teams, the Hall of Fame, managers, stadiums, all stars, record holders, the World Series, and more.

What Does It Do?

Absolutely Trivial “ Baseball does not try to do anything fancy.  It just quizzes you on baseball trivia. The only option or setting you are offered is to choose how many questions you want to be asked on the quiz “ ranging from 10 to 500 at a time.

What Does It Do Well?

The game does its one thing very well.  The trivia questions are quite tough “ or seem so to me anyway.  I ‘m not a huge trivia buff or someone who has done many quizzes like this before getting this app, but as I ‘ve said, I ‘ve followed baseball avidly for many years “ so I should at least have a half-decent general knowledge starting point for this. Even so, it took me ages to get above a 50% success rate in taking the 10-question and 25-question quizzes.

One of the things I like a lot about this game is that it not only has a big pool of questions, but also covers a broad range of topics and eras.  So you get everything from a Manny Ramirez question like the one shown in the screencap at the top of the post, to one about the home field of the Brooklyn Dodgers.  This makes it a ‘nostalgia generator ‘ “ as it helps you remember famous players you ‘d not thought about in a long time, or classic moments from famous games from years back.

If you tap a correct answer, it is highlighted in green.  Incorrect selections are marked in red.  You can tap on each of the four answers while on the quiz screen, if you ‘re dying to know which one is right, or review the whole quiz once you ‘ve finished.  Even on the post-quiz review, correct answers are not shown to you automatically “ so you can tap through the choices until you see which is right if you want to find out, or skip this and try to get it right next time it comes up in a quiz.

Questions are presented in a very basic feeling interface, and the game offers nothing by way of sound effects or any multimedia bells or whistles.  I have nothing against bellls and whistles, but I also have no problem with the plain-jane styling of this app.  In a way, it suits the subject and content of the game.

What ‘s Not So Good?

Everything works in this program “ so there is nothing that is broken or needs fixing in a future update.  There are a few things I think could enhance the app if added though.

Having an option to play against a clock would add a bit of tension to the game “ as there is currently never a timer when you take any of the quizzes.

Tracking scores “ just your own within the game, or globally amongst all players “ would also be a nice feature.

I ‘d also love to see a few photos or images scattered throughout the app.  No need to get very flashy “ just a few photos of some of the players and places would be a nice extra.

Overall

If you like baseball and trivia / the history of the game, then you ‘ll like this app. The no frills look and feel of the program match its character quite well, and the actual content of the quizzes is top notch.

Absolutely Trivial “ Baseball is in the App Store now, and costs $4.99.
