A late report by Gartner (here) indicates that last year Apple was able to double its share of the smartphone market. This is mostly due to the introduction of the 3G iPhone and a lower price point due to carrier subsidies.
The iPhone now accounts for 10.7% of the smartphone market up from 5.2% a year earlier.
The other handset makers that saw significant increases in market share include RIM, HTC and Samsung all of which introduced touchsceen devices this year. They now hold 19.5%, 4.3% and 4.2% respectively.
Nokia which has been slow to adopt touchscreen technology and by their own admission have made some strategic mistakes recently still holds 40.8% but that is down from 60% last year.
Forth quarter results did indicate a slow down in the overall smartphone market, due of course to the current economic condition, but was able to still grow 3.7%.
The most interesting thing I see from these numbers is that the iPhone has been able to capture 11% of the smartphone market with really one phone. Yes there are different capacities and a 2g and 3g but in the end they are really mostly the same phone. All of the other contenders have multiple handsets in the marketplace.
Let see how Apple is able to keep this kind of momentum going.
