If you ‘re even a casual US college basketball fan, you know that we ‘re getting very close to what many think is the greatest sporting event in the US every year “ the NCAA Tournament, the Big Dance “ March Madness!
I love this time of year, and this tournament “ the upsets, the buzzer beaters, the Final Four, and of course filling in brackets with your friends and colleagues to see who ‘s best at picking winners – so I ‘ve been watching out for March Madness related iPhone apps. I ‘ve spotted several already, though surprisingly only one that seems worthwhile so far
If you do an iTunes / App Store search for ‘NCAA march ‘ or ‘NCAA madness ‘ you ‘ll get several relevant apps in the results. Things like Sports Tap NCAA Basketball Tournament Edition, March Madness, Pocket Bracket, and others.
I like the original Sports Tap iPhone app a lot (it ‘s been on my iPhone since it was just a web app!) “ so I ‘ll give that one a look soon for keeping up with scores.
A few of the apps I looked at for tracking NCAA Tourney brackets were disappointing to me “ as they were geared only towards working with brackets from their own web sites and similar. They may well prove to be superbly run, but after years of doing brackets via Yahoo Sports and similarly large sites, I ‘m just not keen to play via the equivalent of a ‘Ma & Pop ‘ site for brackets.
So the app that seems most promising to me so far is called iBracket. I like this one because it lets you import your bracket or brackets from Yahoo, ESPN, CBS Sports, or elsewhere. That ‘s exactly what I ‘m after “ don ‘t force me to join some brand new brackets competition, let me use the mainstream players.
There ‘s not much to see in any of these apps as yet, of course, because we haven ‘t reached ‘Selection Sunday ‘ yet. That is this coming Sunday, March 15th, and is when all the tournament selections are announced and the real bracketology fun begins.
I have to say, this is one of those times of year when working at home is just superb “ as sometimes the TV may accidentally stay on through a whole day ‘s worth of early round games. 🙂
You can find iBracket (for $0.99) and several other ‘Madness ‘ apps in the App Store now. Let us know if you spot any good ones, or tell us who you ‘re picking to go all the way this year
