What’s Your iPhone OS 3.0 Wish List?

iPhone OS 3.0

Now that we know Apple is hosting a media event in just a very few days, and is focusing on providing a ‘preview ‘ of iPhone OS 3.0, it ‘s the perfect excuse (not that we usually need one) to start talking about our Wish List items for the next dot-oh OS version.

There seems to be an assumption by a lot of folks that 3.0 will be a BIG update.  There ‘s even a new SDK apparently.  A big, major update, a real step forward for the iPhone OS, sounds good to me (of course) and the timing couldn ‘t be better (assuming 3.0 will follow not too many months after the announcement event) with the Palm Pre looking impressive and maybe some stepped up competition on the way.

Anyway, these are always exciting times, leading up to these Apple events.  Let ‘s do some speculating / hoping on what the 3.0 OS may include.

Here ‘s my quick, off the cuff Wish List:

Copy & paste “ the big obvious one “ long overdue, making Apple look silly not to have it by now

Push Notifications “ that were promised for way back in September.

Background apps / multitasking “ I don ‘t want performance or battery life to suffer, but Apple needs to allow at least something in this area on existing models, and hopefully a more full-on implementation on a new beefed-up model (that we hopefully see this year)

Apps / Home Screen Management – A much (much, much) better way to re-arrange apps and home screens. Via iTunes, via allowing 3rd party devs to create clever ways to do this “ I don ‘t care how, just do it “ and also give us way to place apps into folders / categories to stave off the 148 apps / 9 screens limit and to help in organizing them better.

Application Launchers “ Again, I don ‘t care if Apple delivers a clever one, or just allows developers to come up with these.  Just let us have smarter ways to launch apps without always having to drop out to a home screen to do so.  I want to be able to spot something interesting in Safari, and immediately launch my favorite voice notes app without leaving Safari.

Video Recording “ there have been several jailbreak apps that have more than proved this can be done, and by all accounts Qik and Ustream are raring to go with recording apps if they could just get approvals.

Theming “ This should be allowed by now.  If we can have apps that are allowed a level of system access that allows them to examine and manage RAM on the iPhone, I do not see how Apple can keep denying the (much lower level) of access needed in order for theming apps to work.

MMS “ I don ‘t care at all about this one, but it ‘s been a heavily demanded feature since Day 1.

I ‘m sure I ‘m forgetting some since I ‘ve reeled those off very quickly, but hopefully it ‘s a starting point.
