Saw this headline at Pocketnow.com earlier, and just had to chuckle. Apparently, according to this post, the soon to be previewed iPhone OS 3.0 is Apple ‘s attempt to respond to Windows Mobile 6.5.
LOL doesn ‘t quite cover it for me. LMAO won ‘t do the trick either.
The article asks whether Apple will ‘close the gap ‘ with OS 3.0. What gap would that be? In what universe are there residents who believe Windows Mobile has a lead in terms of Mobile OS platforms? This reminds me of when I worked in a tech support call center years ago and got asked the most ‘Twilight Zone ‘, bizarre sort of question I ever heard “ just a complete ‘out of left field ‘ type question, and I didn ‘t even know what to ask the user to try to understand what he was after. A seasoned veteran type sitting next to me told me to ask the user ‘how many moons his planet has, and is the atmosphere breathable ‘.
So Apple, who pretty much took everything Windows Mobile and Palm and all the rest had been doing wrong for years and turned it on its head in terms of the iPhone ‘s UI and its OS, are now meant to be worried about ‘responding ‘ to or matching Windows Mobile??? And to a .5 version of it “ that, from what I ‘ve seen, even most Windows Mobile fans are more than a little disappointed with.
Apple are concerned with closing the gap on an OS that held almost 7% (seven) of mobile browsing market share last month, as opposed to iPhone OS ‘ 66% share??? That ‘s not a gap “ that ‘s a few grand canyons worth of distance. I don ‘t think Apple can even see Windows Mobile, or Windows Phones, in the rearview mirror anymore.
Concerned by the mobile OS whose momentum is perhaps best shown by the fact that it now has less applications available for it, after a head start of 9 years, than the iPhone OS does after 8 months of the App Store being open???
Windows Mobile may still have a healthy share of the overall smartphone market, but to suggest they have any sort of lead when it comes to ideas and innovation and overall mobile OS platforms, is absurd.
I can see Apple being very conscious of (and maybe even a little concerned by) what the Palm Pre and webOS are promising; and very aware of what RIM and Microsoft do in the enterprise space “ but I can ‘t stop myself from laughing at the idea that Windows Mobile 6.5 represents anything more than a really bad ‘Before ‘ picture for some upcoming Apple event.
