Quick Look: myStory for iPhone

myStory for iPhone

myStory is an iPhone app that promises to help you make up ‘wacky stories ‘.  It lets you ‘choose from all kinds of stories and fill in missing words to create your own funny stories ‘.

If you want to save yourself a little reading of this non-whacky story, my story on myStory is that it is an extremely lame and not well done app.  I had hoped this would be a fun app to use with my daughter.  I thought we could fill in all the blanks together and enjoy seeing our chosen words sprinkled throughout some good, funny tales.

As expected, the app prompts you to choose a set of words for each story you want to create “ some nouns, adjectives, verbs, and numbers for each one.

The listing of stories to select from (that will have your chosen words added to them to create your ‘new ‘ story) seems quite odd to me.  I can ‘t figure out who it is supposed to appeal to.  This seems to me to be an app clearly aimed at kids or kids plus parents “ I can ‘t imagine too many adults enjoying this one on their own.  But the topics list is not heavily geared towards kids “ featuring titles like ‘Job Interview Tips ‘, ‘New Years Resolutions ‘, and ‘Gettysburg Address ‘.  Just my .02, but I ‘m thinking if you ‘re a grown up and you ‘re playing with a make up stories app about job interview tips, it ‘s gonna be a while before you land that new job. 🙂

There are some story titles that sound kid-oriented “ like ‘Dinosaur ‘ and ‘The Tortoise and the Hare ‘, and a few others.  My daughter (who is 6 years old) and I tried several of these out.  To say the results were boring would be a very large understatement.  Check out the screenshot at the top of this post.  That is the ‘Dinosaur ‘ story we ‘created ‘.  Some things to notice about it:

  • It is not really a story at all.  More like a “ very poor and incomplete “ encyclopedia entry.
  • It is incredibly short, and equally unexciting.
  • It is presented in about as drab and unattractive a style as you could possibly choose.  No pictures, grey background “ bleh.

Again, this is an app that strikes me as one that has to appeal to kids, as I don ‘t see a market for it otherwise.  My daughter ‘s reaction to that first dinosaur ‘story ‘ – ‘Is that it? ‘, ‘Is there any more? ‘.

And every story we tried yielded the same sort of lame results.  This app was a 100% bore and disappointment for both my daughter and I.

If any of this sounds like something you or your child would enjoy “ and I really cannot begin to imagine why it would “ you can find myStory in the App Store, for $1.99.
