One of the various iPhone rumors floating around over the last week has been one that says Apple may be working on a new section of the App Store for ‘Premium ‘ apps. See this Gizmodo post as an example of various covering this topic.
The gist seems to be that this new section would be for more expensive apps “ Gizmodo says $20 and up, though I reckon the way pricing (and perception of what is ‘expensive ‘) has been going, it could easily be $10 and upwards.
I have mixed feelings about how useful this new section would be if it does come along. On the one hand, I love the idea of anything that makes it easier to find ‘quality ‘ apps, or non-novelty apps and all that sort of thing.
But I don ‘t think that more expensive automatically means better, or provides any more guarantee of quality “ and I humbly submit this fugly iPhone priced at $2.5 million, in case any proof was needed. If the first class section on airplanes only meant you pay more for it (and didn ‘t get better seating, extras, higher levels of service etc) those sections would be empty most of the time I think.
I also don ‘t believe that just having the name Electronic Arts, for example, in front of an app ‘s name is a guarantee of a high quality product. I guess what I ‘m trying to get at is if Apple is going to really put effort into having some other criteria apart from just ‘it ‘s from a big-name games publisher and it costs a lot ‘ in order to accept an app into a ‘Premium ‘ section, then OK that might be quite nice “ if some real vetting is going on.
If it is just going to be largely those two things that get you in though (big names and big price tags) then I think I ‘m not very keen at all, and also think they should then just name the section ‘Really Expensive Stuff ‘.
What do you all think? Does a Premium section for the App Store sound good to you? What should be the criteria for getting into that section?
