Still on my iPhone wishlist

While the big news of the day, the announcement of opening up of iPhone SDK 3.0, is essentially and primarily news for developers of iPhone apps, it does satisfy end users with the mere promise of upcoming developments in iPhone software in the near future.

Until summer 09 we are left to drool in anticipation of what Apple has summed up as in-app purchase, peer to peer support, accessories ‘talking ‘ to iPhone, turn by turn direction in Maps, push notifications, cut/copy/paste, landscape mode in key applications, MMS messages, voice Memos, calendar with support for CalDAV, new stock app, system wide search, and Spotlight."

What does iPhone 3.0 leave out?

Several things, most notably and most importantly for me, no improvements on managing and organizing apps on the iPhone as well as in iTunes, no full bluetooth integration and no background apps.

From what Apple has announced, a new P2P feature will allow gamers to connect with like-minded souls via Bluetooth using Bonjour (not Wifi), for collective gaming. Sounds nice, but it ‘s not enough. We still await file-swapping integration via Bluetooth.

The new system wide Spotlight search will enable users to quickly find everything, including apps. Still, it ‘s still a far cry from a smart way to optimize app placement on home screens and in iTunes.

Background apps are the most irritating omission. Apple ‘s reasons for the snub are related to diminishing battery life. Plausible but not insurmountable.

Still, it is admittedly hard not to be happy about these updates, and their implementation will make life with the iPhone even more pleasurable.

Until the next software update.
