spoltight search on iPhone

After all the live “ and later, video “ coverage of the iPhone OS 3.0 Preview event earlier this week, I was convinced that I ‘d ‘sit this one out ‘, wait for the public release of 3.0 even though it looked and sounded awfully good.

Around 48 hours that lasted.  When I realized I was already an approved tester and my device ID was already registered, and I saw that many forum users were having good results running 3.0, I couldn ‘t resist any longer.  I upgraded to iPhone OS 3.0 late last night.

I ‘ve only had time to do mostly boring things so far “ join my home WiFi network, setup mail and Google Sync, tweak general settings, and similar drab tasks.

Oh, and I spent a stupid (really stupid) amount of time re-arranging apps on home screens.  I had 8.5 home screens worth of apps prior to updating.  I trimmed things a little bit in the course of updating, but still have 7.5 screens worth of apps.  Great reminder that this is a BIG missing feature “ a sensible, non-incredibly-dumb way to organize apps and home screens.

Here are some of the things I ‘ve experienced so far with the move to 3.0:

  • As others have reported, first time sync with iTunes did not get everything synced “ not even close.  Photos, music, videos, and many apps were missed.  A second sync fixed this.
  • At least one area of the Settings app shows serious lag “ the Settings > General > Network area.
  • I ‘ll do a separate post on apps compatibility, but so far the vast majority work fine.  Evernote (sadly) is one of the very few that is acting flaky (to say the least) so far.
  • My battery ran down to near zero overnight (it was at roughly 50% when I crashed out).  I ‘ve not had battery issues since the bad old early 2.0 days “ so I need to identify the setting / culprit there (3G, Location Services, Bluetooth are set to Off).
  • Copy & paste text selection takes some getting used to.
  • Spotlight search is brilliant “ clearly the best new feature so far.

That ‘s it so far.  I ‘ll post later on apps that work / don ‘t work for me.  Overall, I ‘m happy I updated “ just need to get some things tweaked and working as well as I had 2.2.1 humming along (I hope). :)

    Hello Patrick,

Am I the only one having problems to comment using the JAiB account?

fiuza – no, probably not. We recently switched to using Disqus as our comments system. Overall, I belive this will be a big win for our readers. We're having problems with a few of the new system's features, but hope to resolve them soon – and the main commenting system itself should hopefully be easier / better to use now …

How can I get notified by e-mail when I get a response from a comment?

fiuza – I'm not sure as yet on that one. It is one of the queries I have with Disqus at the moment.
I think one workaround is to got to Disqus.com, login, and go to the 'Notifications' section and select to have email notifications for comments that are replying to you – but I don't think that fully covers it – only does if someone hits Reply' button below your comment.
You have various RSS subscribe options as well.
Still, this is probably not good enough – I'll keep looking into this …
