Apple earlier today released “Graphics Firmware Update for 17″ Unibody MacBook Pro” This patch specifically addresses “the appearance of vertical lines or distorted graphics on the notebook display.”
The update is recommended for all 17-inch MacBook Pro (Early 2009) users. Here is Apple’s documentation for installing and then determining if you have installed the update correctly.
