So I flip-flopped again today. Decided to do the downgrade from iPhone OS 3.0 back to 2.2.1. I am glad I took a look at 3.0, and have no big regrets about doing so. There was nothing terribly wrong with 3.0 that drove me away.
But as expected from a brand new beta of a major OS update, it has some issues. It is slow / laggy in places. It also feels a little ‘buggy ‘ in places. And although overall apps compatibility is excellent, there are still some apps that were not running as they should under 3.0 “ see my post on 3.0 apps compatibility for lots more detail on that subject. My biggest reason for jumping back to 2.2.1 is that I don ‘t believe it ‘s fair to review apps on 3.0 right now “ as some at least are not geared up for it yet.
Read on for some quick details on how the downgrade went and how it feels to be back on 2.2.1 and jailbroken again for the first time in a long while
The 3.0 to 2.2.1 downgrade went pretty smooth. I used the excellent guide posted by Gizmodo today “ you can find that HERE if you ‘re thinking of doing the downgrade.
I ‘m on a Mac, so I had some extra steps that a Windows user wouldn ‘t need to worry about.
Everything went smooth for me, and I decided to skip the last step in the Mac process “ the jailbreak via Quickpwn “ as the iPhone was getting recognized by iTunes and syncing happily etc. I had a feeling that was not a clever shortcut though and tested an iPhone reboot after the iTunes sync finished. Sure enough, the phone was back to being stuck in restore mode “ so I gave myself a little slap for attempting to skip the last step, and went back and ran iRecovery and Quickpwn.
That worked, and the iPhone synced happily again, and rebooted successfully and all that good stuff.
I had always used Pwnage Tool (on my last several jailbreaks) and had never tried Quickpwn before today. I found it very impressive and super easy to use “ it even provides lovely, big countdown timers when you have to press and hold buttons to get the phone into DFU mode and similar. Good stuff.
Jailbroken Again
As you can probably tell, I wasn ‘t super-keen to be jailbroken again, though the idea of theming my iPhone again always held great appeal. I only have two very early first impressions on being back in the land of jailbreak:
I ‘m so glad to see (and have installed) an old friend “ SBSettings. This app was formerly known as BossPrefs and it is probably my favorite all-time jailbreak app. It does a multitude of things now, but the one thing I love it for is that it gives you an *easy* (as in much, much easier than the iPhone ‘s built-in method) way of toggling On and Off some key iPhone services that are major iPhone battery guzzlers “ like 3G, Bluetooth, SSH etc. I hope it will add Location Services to its list soon.
Cydia is effin ‘ horrible. It ‘s full “ really full “ of ads everywhere you go. Nearly everything I tried to do in it was made more difficult because it ‘s so plastered with ads. Here ‘s a couple pages I got when I wanted to see more information and screencaps for a Winterboard theme:
Good luck to them on charging for apps “ maybe if that gets going well, they can trim out a lot of the ads.
Normally, I would ‘ve included a screencap in this post of my new theme “ as I was looking forward to that piece of things. Thing is, I don ‘t have one yet. I honestly found Cydia such bollocks to work with in that respect that I couldn ‘t be bothered with it. Installed SBSettings and got outta Dodge.
I expect I ‘ll warm to it “ or just learn to tolerate it better “ over coming days, but Yikes “ I really don ‘t like Cydia much for now.
And there you go “ that ‘s my downgrade plus jailbreak experience for today. I ‘d love to hear how you all are getting on with 3.0 if you ‘ve tried it, or the downgrade if you ‘ve tried that out
