Quick Look: Pub Darts for iPhone

Pub Darts for iPhone

I like playing darts a lot, as I ‘ve mentioned here before.  I like playing in pubs / bars that have a dart board, will often go out of my way to choose venues that feature a board, and also enjoy playing on the iPhone “ usually with the excellent Darts game, that I reviewed HERE.

So I really don ‘t need another darts game on the iPhone, but I ‘m always interested to see what ‘s on offer in this area “ so I installed Pub Darts last night.

Sadly, the short story on this one is that if it was a pub, I ‘d walk out before finishing my pint.  Hit the jump for the very slightly longer story

To say this game is quite basic is a big understatement.  In fact it ‘s missing several things that I would consider ‘basics ‘ in nearly any game of this sort.  For instance, it offers no help or explanation at all on how to actually ‘throw ‘ your darts. That is the single thing you ‘ll be doing in the game, and you ‘re left entirely on your own to figure out how to manage it.  This might be acceptable “ though still far from recommended I think “ if throwing was so obvious and intuitive that it just needed no explanation at all.

That is absolutely not the case here though.  I ‘ve played two other darts games on the iPhone, so I ‘m not a novice user by any means “ and I find the throwing action in this one to be way beyond awkward.  I spent around 20 minutes in the game over a few sessions and made no real headway on feeling even a tiny bit comfortable throwing the darts.  By comparison, in Darts (mentioned above), it took me under one minute to feel completely comfortable throwing (and I had two modes to choose from as well).

To give you a little more feel for how awkward (I ‘m struggling not to say stupid “ oops) the throwing method is, I ‘ll just mention that you do not even pick up the darts from off a little rack they ‘re placed in when you want to throw.  You make a throwing gesture with them sitting in their neat little rack “ which just looks and feels daft to me.

Game options are extremely limited as well.  Your choices for ‘type ‘ of game are 301 / 501 / 701.  No cricket.  No levels of difficulty to choose from.  No one player or two player options.

The game ‘s one small unique selling point is that it lets you use a ‘Boss image ‘ (take a new photo or choose from your photo library for this) which it places on the board for you to throw at.  So, if you find a way to master the throwing (good luck with that) you can hurl your arrows at someone you don ‘t like.

Pub Darts is priced at $1.99 “ which is a bit of a shocker for me considering that the previously mentioned Darts game, which has many more features and is a superb game, is a free app.

Much as I like pubs and darts, Pub Darts is a no-go for me.  Deleted well before closing time
