3 free apps to stream radio in Europe
With the recent announcement of last.fm to move to a subscription service for users outside of US, Germany and the UK, I started looking at alternative ways of streaming audio to my iPhone.
I was pleasantly surprised to discover lots of radio stations with standalone apps, merrily reaching a much larger audience way beyond local shores thanks to the App store and the iPhone.
Here are 3 FREE Euroland radio station apps I ‘ve tested and recommend:
1. FM4 (Austria)
Languages: English, German
Ads: limited
Description: progressive – all music genres mixed with news & reports
Nice: extensive Track service, cool minimalist design, infoscreen
Cool, trendy

2. Virgin Radio (Italy)
Language: Italian
Ads: yes, from what I can understand 🙂
Description: rock music, some news
Nice: track info, 6 distinct rock stations, infoscreen
Basic, for the rock purist

3. Planet radio (Germany)
Language: German
Ads: yes
Bandwidth: EDGE & 3G
Description: hip hop, r n b, dance, pop, rock, news
Nice: track info on screen, 4 stations (swipe to switch), feedback form
Of interest for locals: traffic, speed camera, weather alerts
Mixed styles, very stable

While it ‘s important to note these are WYSIWYG apps, with no community interaction or personal control over preferences over content (like last.fm, Pandora or Spotify), it will be interesting to follow the development of the brand of stations in their app form.
