I ‘ve had the new iPhone OS Beta 2 installed for around 18 hours or so now, and have had a chance to use nearly all my most commonly used apps and form some very early impressions of it.
The short story is it ‘s good, better than the first beta by a fair distance “ as many sites have reported last night and today. It definitely feels faster, and less buggy.
Some specific things I ‘ve noticed:
- There is much less ‘lag ‘ in this beta “ far fewer times where there is any latency as you type “ across all apps.
- Speaking of apps “ apps compatibility is still superb. Nearly everything I ‘ve thrown at it (across 7.5 screens of apps) runs just fine. Even a few that had issues on the previous beta. Evernote is one of the very few exceptions “ it is not a happy camper at all “ refusing to open individual notes and crashing back to the home screen frequently.
- I still cannot manage to force quit any application. This is either a big miss or “ hugely optimistic and probably un-realistic leap here “ maybe an indicator that 3.0 won ‘t need force quit via a hardware button because we ‘ll get some sort of ‘soft ‘ system for closing / launching apps. I know, a real longshot.
- There is no more big lag when going to Settings > General > Network (this took ages in Beta 1)
- Most / maybe all the little bits of bugginess with apps that use sound seem to have gone away. I haven ‘t had the sound cut out on me even when opening / using / closing several voice notes apps, the iPod app, and various music apps.
- Spotlight is still way cool.
- Safari seems more stable again. It was far from terrible in Beta 1, but it seems more solid for me this time round.
That ‘s about it for very quick first impressions. I like this beta much better than the previous one so far. I expect I ‘ll find some not so good things as the days go by, but I ‘m well happy with Beta 2 so far.
If you have any specific questions about the new OS / new beta, let me know “ and I ‘ll do my best to answer them. I ‘m not going to mess with MMS or tethering at this stage “ but happy to hear Qs on any other subjects
