Bizarro iPhone Apps: The Amazing John Detector

The Amazing John Detector

Today ‘s bizarro iPhone app is The Amazing John Detector “ an app that truly fits the word ‘bizarre ‘ and many of its synonyms, such as ..

bugged out, curious, eccentric, freakish, ludicrous, odd, oddball, off the wall, offbeat, outlandish, peculiar, ridiculous, unusual, way-out, weird

And so on.

The app ‘s aim is to provide a ‘pretend ‘ / fake detector which is set to (not) detect the presence of John Lennon ‘s spirit near you.  Even just typing that is a little painful to me “ an ‘I think I threw up a little in my mouth ‘ moment.

There are ‘sister ‘ apps that aim to not really detect the spirits of Sid Vicious and Jim Morrison “ and probably more to come if recent App Store trends are anything to go by.

Here ‘s a little of the app ‘s App Store description:

The Amazing John Detector" is built on the most innovative and advanced extra-sensorial sensing technologies, and includes proprietaries algorithm developed by analyzing for years widely sold supermarket tabloids, most popular Bingo predictions and Fortune Tellers TV Shows. Simply tap on "Find it!" to start the Detection Engine. The radar will start up and will senses the presence of the spirit near you. Due to the transient nature of John and his spirit, "The Amazing John Detector" cannot guarantee, in any way, that he will ever detect John in your vicinity.

And here ‘s a slice of its ‘disclaimer ‘

Disclaimer: "The Amazing John Detector" is a simulation joke.

I have to say that for me, the joke ‘s just not funny.  I ‘ve seen other recent ‘fake detector ‘ type apps (wow, the rich array of new categories we have now huh) that, although I wouldn ‘t go for them, do seem possibly amusing or useful as an ice breaker.  Apps like Hot Radar, where you pretend it is locating hot girls / guys near you and you can try out cheesy chatup lines while showing off the fake detector app.

But with this one I just don ‘t see any ice-breaking or chatting up potential.  I see lots of ‘WTF “ you paid for that? ‘ potential.  What do you say to amuse or impress folks with this one?  Or even to describe it without feeling that the spirit of Sid Vicious may well kick your arse for displaying this in public
