ColorSplash – A Simple, Fun Photo Manipulation App for iPhone

ColorSplash3

I ‘ve tried out quite a few photo manipulation apps on the iPhone, but most have either seemed awkward and clumsy to use or have just made me feel like I need to be much more artistic in order to use and enjoy them properly.

ColorSplash is the first app of this sort that I ‘ve found instantly easy to use and lots of fun in terms of the effects it generates.  I am one of the least artistic people on the planet, so I think one of the things I like about ColorSplash is that it does just one thing “ it converts photos to black and white, and then lets you re-add color to selected areas “ so it ‘s simple to get to grips with even for an artistic klutz like me.

Here are some of ColorSplash ‘s features:

  • Undo any number of brush strokes
  • Save multiple sessions
  • In-program help
  • Choose from 4 different brushes (hard or soft edged, opaque or transparent)
  • Work in landscape or portrait

As you would expect, the app lets you snap a new photo to use, or choose one from your photo library.  Once you ‘ve got a pic loaded up, you just use your finger as a brush to choose which areas to bring color back to (or remove color if you change to that mode).

Controls are all handy to access on the one main screen “ so it ‘s quick and easy to switch modes (add or remove color), change brush types, or even to invert your selection with just a couple taps.

The tutorial and help sections of the program are well done “ and the app is easily intuitive enough that you ‘ll rarely need them.

One thing to note that ColorSplash does *not* do “ it does not add new colors to a photo, it only removes or restores original colors.

Here ‘s one of my early, and typically dorky, efforts:

I like ColorSplash a lot.  As I ‘ve said, it ‘s the first of the ‘image manipulation ‘ type apps that I ‘ve managed to feel comfortable with “ and I look forward to playing around a lot more with it.

ColorSplash is in the App Store now, and costs $1.99.
