Apparently there ‘s a new Star Trek film due to be released soon. I ‘m not a huge fan, so I only learned that via the description page for a new iPhone novelty app “ Star Trek Phaser. I guess the hype and promotion train for the new movie will be gaining momentum soon, and we ‘ll see more App Store entries soon.
In the meantime, despite not being a big Star Trek fan, I thought this one looked like fun. I ‘ve seen Star Trek and know what a phaser sounds like “ so I thought I ‘d give it a shot, especially as it ‘s a free app.
Star Trek Phaser actually offers a little more than I expected. I thought it would likely just show me a phaser on its screen and hopefully make some authentic sounding phaser firing noises.
Well, it does that “ and honestly that is easily my favorite part of the app “ but it also lets you play shooting games. You can go one player against the machine, so to speak, or two player if you have friends within the same WiFi network, and submit your high scores and see where you stand amongst your global phaser-blasting peers.
I tried out the one-player game a bit and it ‘s OK enough “ pretty basic (shoot at targets as they pass quickly at the top of the screen) but a decent little diversion.
As I ‘ve said, my favorite part is just hearing the ‘Stun ‘ and ‘Kill ‘ firing noises. I tried them out on my dog, thinking they ‘d have him at least a little shook up, or interested “ but so far he is (cough!) unphased.
Anyway, whether or not you ‘re a major Star Trek fan, if you ‘re even vaguely familiar with the show or movies and what a phaser sounds like, this is a pretty good free novelty app. Probably not a long-term keeper, but more amusing to me than all those pretend gun apps by a long way.
