Friendfeed “ my favorite ‘web conversations site ‘ (for lack of a much-needed better phrase) “ has launched a new beta this week, which includes a major re-design and a switch to all real-time updates. In an article covering the new beta, Venturebeat has some interesting comments from one of Friendfeed ‘s founders on the subject of an iPhone native app for the service:

Once FriendFeed is done polishing the beta version a bit more, the plan is to work on an updated mobile version, Buchheit tells me in acknowledging the battery issue. Notably, he also says that the company ‘s finally considering a native app for the iPhone that could take advantage of the new Push Notification feature coming in the iPhone 3.0 software due this summer.

‘Personally, I think the combination of filters and push notifications could be really cool. Imagine getting a buzz on your phone every time someone mentions your name, ‘ Buchheit says. But he notes FriendFeed ‘s not certain it wants to go the native app route yet.

I don ‘t know exactly where or when this originated, but I ‘ve been convinced for months that Friendfeed was definitely working on a native iPhone app “ and had recently heard it was due out soon.  Each time I ‘ve tried out one of the other native clients for FF, I ‘ve thought that Friendfeed ‘s own offering would probably be the best once it emerged.

My bad “ not sure where I thought I heard that, but it seems that was way off. 

I hope they will ultimately decide to bring out their own native app “ and the push notifications stuff sounds very cool.

In the meantime, I ‘ll continue to use my current favorite native Friendfeed app, Buddyfeed.  I like FF ‘s web interface for iPhone, but have been using Buddyfeed for quite a while as my preferred FF client.
