QuickLook: iCraig for iPhone

There’s an app for that. No really. There’s an app for that.

Apple loves to display the fact that there is a seemingly endless array of applications available for the iPhone and iPod Touch and the longer the devices are around it seems like the more applications we are getting. Now truth be told there’s a HUGE majority of them that are perfectly useless. You can find apps that fart, moan, or make an M60 machine gun sound pretty much by the thousands in the app store. However, not all apps are completely useless, some are even darned handy to have around and iCraig by SplashData is one of those apps that is going to see a lot of use on my iPhone.

Times are tough, and chances are really good that they’re going to get even tougher for a lot of people. I personally think a vast majority are going to turn to Craigslist for things they need and to unload the things they don’t need instead of heading out to the local Best Buy and paying retail for something. I mean let’s be honest here, many of us have dumped a ton of dough on something only to find it didn’t suit our needs, so we would like to recoup some of that dough for the next useless thing… and vice versa.

Enter Craigslist … like a swap meet on the Internet and more importantly to our discussion here – enter iCraig, which in my opinion is almost better than actually using the real Craigslist.

I’m going to zip through this quicklook because I think at a price of $1.00 iCraig is a pretty good investment. I’m just going to say now, if you spend time on Craiglist (aside from the meet people section) then you’re not going suffer buyers remorse with iCraig. You just aren’t. Take a look through the info below and I think you’ll find iCraig does the job with some benefits over just using Craigslist itself.

First though – one of my only complaints. What the heck does this mean? The warnings when creating a bookmark and leaving a required field blank could be a little better. Scratch that… the warning is useless and I hope SplashData fixes this. But, I guess I could fix it myself by putting in the required data the first time!

Alright, this is the main screen of iCraig. All of this should be fairly self explanatory. The location, category and subcategory all move through table views so you don’t have to do any typing. The search bar at the top lets you search by keywords if you’re looking for a specific something, instead of just browsing the entire category. The “+” button saves this search as a bookmark (see below).

Here’s where the real power of iCraig is. Filters. One thing that I won’t do (typically) is even bother looking at an ad if it doesn’t have pictures. I mean really -You can’t sell me a couch if I don’t know what it looks like, and I’m not about to drive 10-30 miles without at least having an idea of what I’m going to look at. And you’re definitely not going to sell me a laptop if I can’t see some pictures first.

Even freebies need pictures. The other nice thing is I can set a price range. Very handy when shopping for something that could fall into almost any price range depending on how old it is… like searching computers for “Compaq”.

See what I mean… setting price ranges sometimes can be really helpful. I could have saved myself from having to relive the horrors of Windows 98se had I only set a price range for this search…

If you do a lot of searching for the same thing over and over – iCraig includes the ability to bookmark a search which is super handy! Really along with the filter for only ads with images, this is the coolest part of iCraig.

Finally, if you so desire you can email seller (which opens iMail) directly or you can forward a link to the ad to someone else.

iCraig is available now from SplashData on the iPhone and iPod touch for $0.99 on the iTunes App Store.
