TweetStack = Interesting New iPhone Twitter App

TweetStack

Thanks to a tweet from one of the guys at iPhone in Canada – http://twitter.com/iphoneincanada “ last night, I discovered an interesting new iPhone Twitter app.  It ‘s called TweetStack, and it ‘s the first iPhone Twitter client that ‘s interested me in quite a while, as I ‘ve been so happy with Tweetie.

TweetStack offers a fairly strong list of features, but a couple of things stand out immediately.  One is that it is meant to sort of build on TweetDeck, if you use that on the desktop, which I rarely do “ so I ‘ll leave it to Jennifer Van Grove at Mashable to provide a bit more background on this element:

Even though TweetStack isn ‘t affiliated with TweetDeck, the app gets mad cool points by letting you import your existing TweetDeck columns as-is into the app. It ‘s not quite as simple as it sounds, but before you login to TweetStack, go here and follow the instructions to import your TweetDeck database file. Then, launch the app and every single one of your TweetDeck columns will magically appear in your iPhone app. You can edit and add to them as you use the app.

The second thing that jumps out at me about TweetStack is its ‘stacks ‘ feature.  Stacks is a misleading name for this as it is really nothing like stacks on a Mac.  Stacks within TweetStack are groupings of items that you can create and customize, and get one tap access to via a bottom bar button.

So you can, for instance, create a ‘stack ‘ for a keyword you want to track.  Let ‘s say you want to track the word ‘iPhone ‘ “ you just choose to add a search stack, and enter that as your search term.  You ‘ll then be able to look at that stack and see every tweet “ from any Twitter user anywhere, not just people you follow “ that includes the word iPhone.  And it will catch every mention of iPhone, no hashtag (#) symbol required.

You can also create stacks based on twitpic tags, or Twitter friends, or location keywords “ so I could create one to look for mentions of Austin, for example.

I love the stacks feature and look forward to playing with it a lot more.

TweetStack has a fairly nice interface as well, though I ‘ve found some bits I find awkward in my initial usage of it.  It takes a long time to load up the ‘All ‘ tweets tab, for example, and I ‘ve also not yet found the easy way to get rid of an unwanted stack when you create one that doesn ‘t end up being interesting.

Here are some of the app ‘s other notable features:

  • TweetDeck import
  • Multiple Accounts
  • Add, edit, delete and reorder stacks
  • Unread message count on stacks and application icon
  • Locally saved messages for offline mode
  • SMS style send and recieve of messages
  • @ twitter id and # hash tag autocompletion
  • TwitPic upload
  • Load conversation
  • Twitter user profile view
  • ReTweet shortcut
  • Inline @,# and web links

After giving TweetStack a little whirl since last night, I think it ‘s an interesting and promising app “ probably even moreso if you ‘re a big TweetDeck fan on the desktop.  It won ‘t be displacing Tweetie as my favorite Twitter app on iPhone “ but it ‘s interesting enough to keep around for a while and continue playing with it.

As always, I ‘d love to hear your thoughts on this new app, especially if you ‘re also a TweetDeck user.

You can find TweetStack in the App Store now, priced at $2.99.
