Please Note: This game was called Scramble Live when I got it. It now appears to have had a name change “ to Word Scramble by Zynga.
If you ‘ve been reading this blog for any length of time, you ‘ve probably sussed by now that I ‘m a sucker for word games. I have quite a few of them on the iPhone and probably play this type of game more often than any other “ so Scramble Live is right up my alley.
It ‘s another game where you try to find words in a jumbled grid as fast as you can “ but with some strong features to set it apart from many other games of its type
What Does It Do?
Scramble Live lets you play on your own, play with friends via Play and Pass, or play live against others online.
When trying to form words in the jumble, you can only use each letter once per word, and you can form words by selecting letters vertically, horizontally, diagonally, or any combination of those. You can just shake the iPhone to turn the board around “ this will *not* change round where the letters are in the jumble, it ‘ll just give you a different overview of the board, which sometimes helps spot a few words you hadn ‘t seen.
What Does It Do Well?
Scramble Live is easily the most challenging word game of its type that I ‘ve played on the iPhone “ and I ‘ve played quite a few, including Text Twist, Smashword, Word Fu, and others. I think the reason for this is just how the jumbles themselves are constructed “ with the letters consistently in relatively difficult combinations, or at least in combinations I find very challenging. It always feels as if you have ample time to search for and make words though.
The challenging nature of the game holds true whether I ‘m playing solo or online. Here is my most heady moment of success thus far (after a shocking number of efforts) in the online game – that ‘s 16th place out of 156 players at that point in time “ luckily screencapped moments before fading farther back in the pack 🙂 :

The online play is excellent. Because Zynga is a leading ‘social games ‘ publisher, and because this game has lots of Facebook fans / players, there are always tons of eager online opponents ready to go. I have never found a time where there are less than 80-150 online opponents available and available very quickly once you choose that game mode.
I find the game itself fairly addictive to play, and the online component makes it even more so.
The game ‘s interface is simple and game play is as well. It ‘s a game you can dive straight into with no help or explanations.
The app is also rock solid in my experience. It has not crashed ever for me, in an awful lot of regular and daily use for many weeks now, and has very, very rarely showed any latency or lag.
What ‘s Not So Good?
Nothing to see here folks. I just haven ‘t found anything not to like about this app after a whole lot of usage.
Overall
If you like word games, this one is a must try. If you like word games and some stiff online competition, then this one is a no-brainer, must-get app. It ‘s a definite keeper, and a daily companion, for me.
You can find Scramble Live “ now under its new name, Word Scramble by Zynga “ in the App Store now, and it ‘s free.
