Finally, An iPhone Twitter App I Don’t Want

Birdhouse for iPhone

After my mini Twitter app frenzy over last weekend (trying out two iPhone Twitter apps when I already have a clear and more than capable favorite in this area), I ‘m glad to see a new Twitter app that I can honestly say I just don ‘t need or want.

Although the new Birdhouse app seems very well done, and is certainly very cleverly promoted, I just don ‘t fit its single purpose.  It ‘s an iPhone Twitter app “ but one that only allows you to create drafts of your tweets, post them, and preserve your history of drafts and posted tweets.

So the app ‘s entire focus is on composing tweets “ it does not show tweets from others or do any of the other typical things a standard Twitter client does. It needs to be used in addition to a standard Twitter app, unless you have no need to ever see anything but your own tweets and drafts.

TUAW takes a stab at identifying the type of Twitter users who will be very glad to see Birdhouse:

There exists, however, within the throng of Twitter users, a group of people who use Twitter as the stage from which they deliver their own special brand of humor.

For these types, a tweet isn’t something that’s typed and quickly posted a few seconds later — it’s a chance to make his/her followers chuckle. To that end, they take great care to ensure that each tweet is finely honed and worded to deliver the maximum amount of gag within the 140-character limit. Birdhouse is an application for these people.

I follow a few folks who might fit into that category, and who do regularly produce very funny and witty tweets “ and this app does seem very well suited for those sort of users.

I ‘ve never aspired to be that witty or clever on Twitter (or elsewhere really), which I think saves me from being continually disappointed at coming up short.

If you are a skillful enough Twitter wordsmith to benefit from this type of composition aide, Birdhouse offers a good set of features, including:

  • Count down to 140 characters
  • Save as many drafts as you want
  • Save and publish from multiple Twitter accounts
  • Capture ideas offline, even in Airplane mode
  • Rate drafts with stars and sort by best or latest
  • Backup everything via email

There ‘s a very funny Intro / Demo video for Birdhouse “ which you can take a look at HERE.

Anyone tried this one out yet?  If so, is it working well for you, improving your tweets?

Birdhouse is available now in the App Store, and costs $3.99.
