UniWar is a new turn-based strategy game for the iPhone. I ‘ve been getting to know it a little for the last day or so, and it ‘s got a whole lot to offer. Here ‘s a slice of its App Store description that provides a good overview of the game:
UniWar is the online multiplayer turn-based strategy game for the iPhone. Players take turns building their army and fighting against each other using the strengths of their units while taking advantage of the terrain. It is like chess or checkers but with a lot more possibilities and different boards.
And here are some of its key features:
- 3 races, each with eight varied units
- 50 + maps to choose from with up to 8 players
- Play up to 20 games at once
- Team play allows 2v2, 3v3, and 4v4
- Campaign mode with 21 missions
- Play modes: Multiplayer online, Vs. the phone AI, Vs. a friend on the same phone, and Campaign mode
- Create or join several games
- Email notifications when it ‘s your turn
- Cross-platform game “ play your friends even if they have another phone model
I ‘ve only played in solo mode so far, as I am nowhere near good enough to venture into the online fray yet “ but I ‘ve been enjoying the game a lot already.
The game has good graphics and sound effects “ they ‘re not spectacular, but they ‘re solid and feel typical of the turn-based strategy genre.
Help and instructions on how to play are very good. I need to spend more time with these and get to know unit types and terrain advantages better “ I was impatient and dove straight into playing without taking more than a glance at these.
The fact I was able to dive right in is good though “ the game play is very intuitive and it ‘s pretty easy to learn on the fly as well. For example, you get a good explanation of a unit ‘s strengths and weaknesses, and a listing of all its movement / attack / defense capabilities, when you click to look at whether to construct one.
The game has been rock solid for me thus far “ zero crashes or lag when playing, and it nicely saves your current game (though not more than one at a time in the offline game modes it seems) when you exit back to its main menu.
The only glitch I ‘ve noticed so far is that when you switch to landscape mode, it does not switch back to portrait unless I exit and go back into the game.
I ‘m a big fan of turn-based strategy games, and this one looks very promising to me. I ‘m looking forward to getting to know it a lot better and maybe even venturing into online games once I do.
UniWar is in the App Store now, and is currently priced carrying a ‘Grand Opening Sale Price ‘ of just $0.99 “ apparently it will normally go for $7.99.
