New iPhone Apps: Soccer Manager

SoccerManager

Boy was I psyched to see this app show up in the App Store yesterday.  It ‘s called Soccer Manager, is from Fizz Software, and is a football management game a la Championship Manager / Football Manager.

I am crushed that it will not run for me under my current 3.0 Beta 3 version of the iPhone OS “ one of the very, very few apps that will not run on the current beta, and it is one I want to check out so badly.  I ‘ve been playing Championship Manager / Football Manager (and its lamely named US version) for many years and have spent ridiculous, shameful amounts of hours playing them, had conversations with myself about team selection in the shower, and found myself saying things like ‘when he played for me at Arsenal ‘ when talking about a player in a televised match at the pub after grueling all-night sessions with these games.

Anyway, leaving aside my current heartache over it for a moment, here are some of the features of Soccer Manager:

  • Manage a team from six European countries (choose from two leagues deep in England, Spain, Italy, France, Germany, or Holland)
  • Buy and sell players
  • Challenge for domestic league and cup, and qualify for European competitions
  • Manage club finances
  • View individual players ‘ skills, stats, and contract details
  • Transfer budgets and wage caps
  • Sackings, resignations, and job markets
  • Incredible crowd sound effects and text commentary
  • Play and save multiple games
  • Customize and adjust team strategy and formations
  • Trophy cabinet and full historical status
  • Touch players in game to make substitutions
  • Pre-season expectations and post season reviews
  • Customize team and individual training schedules

Sounds excellent, very complete and very much like (and surely modeled on) Football Manager.  Short of seeing a full iPhone version of Football Manager itself, this is about the best news possible for iPhone-owning fans of football management games.  Since this game shows slightly altered / made up team names, I ‘m assuming they have not been able to get the licensing agreements that Football Manager has “ so you ‘ve got to play with invented teams / players.

I ‘ve got a support query in with Fizz Software, to see if they can help me make it run without crashing on my 3.0 beta.  In the meantime, if any of you have had a chance to play this, please feel free not to share any glowing praise or match reports,  tales of leagues and trophies won or anything like that.  Just kidding, I can take it, let me know what you think and how you ‘re doing “ I might console myself by having a go on the PC later on 🙂
