Review: Digits for iPhone – Sometimes The Simplest Apps Are The Best …

Digits

Digits is a new iPhone app that does one very simple thing, and does it very well.  It makes it quick and easy to take down a person ‘s (or place ‘s) phone number and get it added to the Contacts app.

Sure, there are plenty of existing ways to jot down a number on the iPhone, and of course you can always just use the Contacts app itself to add a new contact and record their number “ but none of the existing methods are as easy as Digits

The Contacts app, for example, forces you to start by entering a first and / or last name when you choose to add a new contact, and then tap Save after entering something in, then tap again to ‘add new phone ‘ “ and then start keying a number in.

There are a lot of scenarios where you may want a faster, easier method of just grabbing somebody ‘s phone number.  For instance, if you ‘ve met someone new and interesting when you ‘re out and about and they ‘re offering up their phone number just as you ‘re saying your goodbyes, ideally you want to grab it with minimal time and fuss.

Digits is great for this purpose.  When I first heard it mentioned I was a little worried that it would be one of those apps that offers to do a simple job like this, but wants to force you into letting it hold the info within the app itself, or something similarly daft.  I was very relieved to discover it does no such thing.  It does its simple but ever-so-useful job “ grabs up a phone number plus contact name “ and throws them straight into the built-in Contacts app just like a good app should. 🙂

How quick and easy is it to use?  Here ‘s how easy

Launch Digits and enter a phone number via the nice big numeric keypad

Slide to continue “ and enter a first and / or last name

Tap Done.  And you are done, and the contact is in your address book now

On the next screen you can choose to add another new entry, or to continue editing the one you just created “ which takes you to a screen where you can edit the name, number and ringtone fields.

I ‘ve purposely done this review in a different, much simpler format than usual “ partly because Digits is such a simple app that this format just feels right.

Also because I really have no need on this one for ‘What does it do well? ‘ and ‘What ‘s not so good ‘ sections “ as the answers are very simple.  It does one thing, and it does that one thing well.  There is nothing not so good to comment on.

I ‘m very fond of simple, easy to use apps “ especially those that play nicely with built-in apps and act as a useful extension of them.  Digits fits the bill very nicely.  Very worthwhile little app.

You can find Digits in the App Store now, priced at $1.99.

what's the difference between this and just go to your regular phone key pad and punch in the number and click on the add new contact sign? Doesn't that kinda of do the same thing? Why do we need a separate app for this? sometimes its takes me longer to find an app than just opening my regular phone app.

    • The difference is a small one or a big one depending on your point of view. It basically takes far fewer taps to have a number and new contact saved with Digits. The Phone app involves: enter number, tap the icon for adding a number to new / existing contact, choose new contact, edit first/last name, click save on that, click save again – at a minimum. Digits involves: enter number, slide to continue, add first / last name, tape Done.

      It's quicker.
