Google Reader preventing me from reaching stardom
I’m still not sure about why this happens, but it’s as if Google doesn’t want me to achieve my full browsing potential, and it can be a real pain in the RSS. The issue at hand is of course the strange bug in Reader that refuses to let you star an item, no matter how many times you tap on it, and whether or not you took your vitamins. A quick google search just showed people rejoicing over the “new” UI, but I didn’t see any complaints similar to mine. Old timers will likely remember the first iterations of Reader having a button within each feed item that allowed you to star things flawlessly. As it is, I often have to mark the item as unread, refresh the list, and then hope Reader will let me add the item to my favourites.
It’s certainly not the end of the world, but I’d actually prefer it if the sky was falling. At least then I’d have easier access to stars.

LOL – I've been suffering with this one for some time now as well – very annoying. I'm guessing you've discovered the same not-so-great workaround as I have – if it's a post I really don't want to lose track of I tick the 'Keep Unread' check box at the bottom of the post, then go back to top of the page and hit Refresh. Then the starring will generally work and I get rid of the Keep Unread marking …

You're totally correct on this one. The worst part is the completely random nature of the no-star-allowed bug, making one think that maybe it's just one part of the screen, or a certain way you tapped it.
Kinda ruins those mornings where I want to grab a little more horizontal time and feed-read in bed
I experienced the same issue earlier this week but it seems to working again now..something screwy going on
It's been happening to me for quite a while now, and it still randomly does.
You are using my workaround as well….select the item to be “Keep unread” and then I hit “Mark these items as read”
Then the feeds I've read and don't care about are read and hidden, and the ones I want to star can now be starred.
I have this exact same problem, too. I thought I was the only one!
