iPhone Art: The New Yorker Magazine Cover Drawn Entirely on iPhone

The New Yorker cover, drawn on iPhone

The idea of the iPhone as a real, powerful artist ‘s tool seems to be going from strength to strength lately.  The latest example of this is the news that the cover of the next issue of The New Yorker magazine was drawn entirely on the iPhone, with the Brushes app.

The cover was done by Portuguese artist Jorge Columbo.  I posted about Columbo ‘s excellent New York cityscape creations with Brushes a couple months ago “ and still think they are stunning.  The New Yorker cover is another in this series.

Columbo, like Britain ‘s David Hockney, is now using the iPhone as one of his primary tools.  He ‘s apparently told The New York Times that it lets him work ‘without having to carry all my pens and brushes and notepads with me ‘.

Here ‘s another of my favorites from Columbo ‘s New York cityscape series:

I ‘ve also just discovered this great video at The Times Online, where Jorge Columbo gives an overview of his drawing techniques with the iPhone “ where he even mentions the challenges of drawing on the iPhone when it gets cold in New York.

I love Columbo ‘s iPhone work “ it ‘s great to see it getting featured in The New Yorker.  I also am continually amazed at how powerful the Brushes app is.  Has it been on one of the ‘There ‘s an app for that ‘ TV ads yet?  If not, it needs to be.
